1. Flags are one of those products that almost everyone is familiar with, and maybe even utilised in their own marketing. Feather, crest, blade, fin, teardrop…at first glance they can all seem fairly similar. They all wave in the wind, they all display branding, and they all come with a pole. So, how do you know which shape is the right choice?

At Venture Banners, our goal has always been to make selling large-format print as accessible as possible for printers of all sizes. But with seven different flag styles available, we know choosing the right one can sometimes feel a bit overwhelming. The good news is that there isn’t really a wrong answer.

Most flag shapes perform a very similar job and the real difference comes down to the visual effect you’re trying to create, how the artwork will sit within the shape, and the environment it will be used in.

So, don’t let decision fatigue get in the way of selling flags to your customers. Take a look though our handy tips on choosing the right flag shape instead.

First things first…choose your material

  1. Before becoming overwhelmed with the shape of your flag, you first need to consider the appropriate material.

  1. For most flag applications, our standard Flag Polyester material is the ideal choice. This knitted polyester is lightweight, durable, and produces vibrant graphics using our dye-sublimation printing process. The ink is heat-fixed into the fibres, creating a scuff-resistant finish that’s washable and suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.

    • Airmesh Polyester - Detail
    • AirMesh Polyester is ideally suited to demanding outdoor weather as it allows wind to flow through the material
  1. For more demanding outdoor environments, AirMesh Polyester might be better suited. Its perforated nature allows wind to flow through the material while still delivering excellent print quality. It’s available across the majority of our flag range, excluding Flamingo and Arch Flag, and is particularly popular for exposed locations and longer-term outdoor installations.

What every Venture Banners flag has in common

  1. Now, while all flags have their own characteristics, they certainly have a lot in common. While each shape might look different, most of our flags offer the same core benefits.

They are lightweight, portable and easy to assemble, supplied with high-performance aluminium and GRP poles, printed in-house with our 3.2m-wide VUTEk FabriVU dye-sublimation printers and professionally finished in-house by our sewing department. They also include a carry bag as standard, are available in up to four sizes, and can be paired with a range of different base options depending on where they’ll be displayed - even on walls and car roofs.

  1. Whichever shape you choose, flags offer a lightweight, portable and quick to install branding solution that’s washable and reusable. What more could you ask for?

Now, it’s just a matter of which shape to choose.

Flamingo Economy Flag: When budget comes first

  1. First up, is our Flamingo Economy Flag. The most cost-effective option, this rectangular flag is printed onto Flag Polyester and available with a basic parasol base, offering a simple and practical solution where affordability is a priority.

Its rectangular print area makes artwork straightforward, particularly for logos, promotional messaging, and larger blocks of text. Because the shape remains consistent from top to bottom, there is little compromise when designing graphics.

  1. This makes the Flamingo ideal for retail promotions, forecourts, showrooms, exhibitions, and temporary marketing where customers want maximum visibility without stretching the budget. If your customer simply wants an eye-catching flag at the lowest possible cost, this is often the best place to start.

Feather Flag: The all-round favourite

  1. If someone pictures a promotional flag, chances are they’re imagining a Feather Flag.

    • Feather Flag With White Hems and Background
    • Feather Flags are a great choice for almost any design as their long, sweeping shape creates a large printable area
  1. Its long, sweeping shape creates one of the largest printable areas in the range, making it particularly effective for businesses wanting to showcase logos, branding or bold graphics from a distance.

Because the graphic tapers gradually towards the top, there’s plenty of space for artwork without feeling cramped, making Feather Flags a safe choice for almost any application. They’re at home outside car dealerships, retail parks, sporting events, exhibitions, hospitality venues, and even ice cream vans.

Crest Flag: A softer, more premium look

  1. The Crest Flag shares many of the same practical benefits as the Feather Flag but offers a different visual impact.

Its curved top and bottom give it a balanced, elegant appearance that works particularly well for premium brands, hospitality settings, visitor attractions, and events where presentation is particularly important.

The symmetrical shape nicely frames artwork, making logos feel centred and refined while still providing plenty of printable space.

Blade Flag: Clean, modern and structured

    • The straight lower edge of the Blade Flag offers a more contemporary feel
  1. If your customer prefers sharper lines and a more contemporary feel, the Blade Flag could be a great choice.

The straight lower edge gives the graphic a cleaner, more structured finish than the Feather shape while still maintaining a large printable area. They’re ideal for automotive businesses, retail environments, and exhibition stands where a sleek, professional appearance is key.

Fin Flag: Often found at the beach

  1. As the name suggests, the Fin Flag takes inspiration from aquatic shapes like shark or dolphin fins. Its flowing shape naturally creates a sense of movement and this shape is often a popular choice for leisure, watersports, tourism, outdoor attractions and sporting events like surf competitions.

Teardrop Flag: Designed to stay visible

    • The curved frame of the Teardrop Flag keeps the fabric under constant tension, meaning the graphic remains clearly visible even in lighter winds
  1. The Teardrop Flag is probably the most distinctive shape in our range. Unlike the longer flag shapes, the curved frame keeps the fabric under constant tension, meaning the graphic remains clearly visible even in lighter winds where traditional flags may hang more loosely.

This makes it particularly effective where a consistently readable logo is important, like retail entrances, exhibitions, forecourts, and promotional events. Its compact shape naturally lends itself to bold logos and simple messaging rather than lengthy text, allowing branding to be impactful from every angle.

Arch Flag: Making an entrance

  1. Finally, at 4m wide and 3m high, our Arch Flag is hard to miss. This makes it ideal for creating gateways, entrances, and focal points for festivals, sporting events, charity runs, outdoor activations, and finish lines.

    • At 4m wide and 3m high the Arch Flag is ideal for gateways, entrances and focal points for event such as race start and finish lines
  1. Whether welcoming visitors or marking the start of a race, an Arch Flag immediately creates an arrival experience and helps define key areas within an event space.

Like the rest of our flag range, replacement graphics are available separately, allowing customers to reuse the hardware across multiple events throughout the year.

Getting the artwork right

  1. Choosing the right flag material and shape is only two-thirds of the equation. Good artwork is what really brings these products to life.

Because every flag has a different shape, we always recommend using our dedicated artwork templates. They’re designed specifically for each shape and size, taking the guesswork out of positioning logos, text and imagery.

  1. A few simple rules to remember include:

    • Extend background artwork to the bleed line
    • Keep important text and logos inside the safe area
    • Allow for the flag sleeve when positioning key design elements
    • Supply artwork at the correct template size with fonts outlined and images embedded
    • Export as PDF where possible, although AI and EPS files are also accepted
  1. One simple tip is to keep messaging short and sweet. Flags are designed to be seen from a distance and are constantly moving in the breeze, so bold branding and minimal wording usually create the best impact.

A few things to ‘flag’ when offering flags to your customers

  1. When discussing flags with your customers, there are a few practical things worth keeping in mind.

    1. Flag poles naturally flex in the wind, so a slight lean is perfectly normal. Choosing the correct base for the environment and securing it properly will ensure the display performs as intended.
    2. Location also matters. Outdoor flags are exposed to UV, pollution and the weather, all of which will naturally affect their lifespan over time. Regular cleaning, careful storage, and bringing flags indoors during strong winds will all help to maximise their life.
    3. Life expectancy is dependent on the climatic conditions and amount of use, but the general lifespan of a regularly used flag is six months.

Helping your customers choose their flags with confidence

  1. Ultimately, there isn’t a single “best” flag shape. The right choice will depend on what your customer wants to achieve, whether that’s maximum branding space, a premium appearance, a contemporary look, or simply the best value for money.

Yes, we are here to print the flags, but we’re also here to help you understand the differences so you can confidently recommend the right solution for every project. Make sure to get in touch with any questions you might have.
